Lesson Plan
⏱ 50–60 minutes📦 A copy of Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest by Kirsty Applebaum, chart paper, paper, pencils, crayons or colored pencils
Learning Goals
- Identify Princess Minna, the enchanted forest setting, and a central challenge using details from the text and illustrations.
- Sequence three important events and explain how Minna’s actions affect what happens next.
- Describe Minna’s character traits, supporting each description with something she says or does.
- Create an imagined forest encounter that fits the book’s setting and shows a character responding to a challenge.
Activity Steps
- 1.Show the cover and read the title. Ask: “What might make a forest enchanted?” Record predictions, explaining that readers will check their ideas against the story.
- 2.Read the book aloud or have students read selected sections with partners. Pause to discuss what Minna wants, what challenges arise, and how she responds. Point to text or illustrations that support students’ answers.
- 3.Create a class chart labeled “Character,” “Setting,” “Challenge,” and “Response.” Add details from the book, then have students draw or write three important events in order.
- 4.Invite students to invent one additional encounter for Minna in the enchanted forest. Have them include a forest detail, a challenge, and Minna’s response. Grades K–1 can draw and dictate; grades 2–5 can write a short scene with dialogue.
- 5.Have partners share their scenes and identify one detail that fits the original book. Close with an exit response: “Minna is ___ because ___,” supported by an action or statement from the story.
